There are two types medicines used to treat male infertility. One treats a specific problem such as a deficiency of a hormone needed for sperm production and development. The other group of medicines have certain vitamins and amino acids necessary for sperm development and function. The doctor, after careful history, examination and blood tests will decide which medicines are appropriate for which patient.
What are the common medications to treat male infertility?
Several medications ranging from hormone therapy to male fertility injections are used to improve sperm morphology and motility. Most common medications are:
1. Clomiphene Citrate or Clomid
It is a fertility drug which stimulates the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain. This generates hormone production and the release of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinising Hormone (LH), which increases sperm production. Your doctor will recommend how frequently it should be taken.
2. hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) or hMG (human Menopausal Gonadotropin)
These are hormones that help sperm production and development. They are usually given when the body is not producing adequate amounts of this hormone. This deficiency is determined by a blood test. The duration and dosage will be decided by the treating doctor. The treatment has to be under medical supervision
Anastrazole or Arimidex
Anastrazole are prescribed when a man’s Estrogen levels are higher and Testosterone levels are lower, than expected. Estrogen (female hormone) has a negative effect on sperm production. Arimidex work to decrease the production of Estrogen and increase Testosterone in the body.
- Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART)
—Intrauterine insemination (IUI):
This treatment is commonly recommended for a couple when all routine tests are normal. This condition is called unexplained infertility. Here the husband’s sperm is processed and inserted into the wife’s womb after stimulation.
—In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
There are certain conditions where fertilization of the egg by the sperm cannot happen inside the body. IVF is a process of assisted reproduction where the fertilization is facilitated outside the body and the fertilized egg, now called embryo is transferred into the womb to achieve a pregnancy. This is also known as test tube baby.
