What is Endometriosis?
Endometrium is the tissue that lines the uterus. If it grows outside the uterus in areas such as the ovaries, intestines or the inner lining of the pelvis, it is then called endometriosis. This tissue breaks down and bleeds during every period and causes severe pain during periods. In addition, it may lead to infertility.
What are the common symptoms of Endometriosis?
- Severe pelvic pain and cramping during periods, and sexual intercourse
- Pain with bowel movements or urination
- Excessive bleeding
- Infertility
- Fatigue, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating or nausea, during menstrual periods
How does Endometriosis affect fertility?
The exact mechanism is not known. It may cause the blockage of the tubes or damage the eggs or prevent the release of the eggs from the ovary.
What are the treatments available for Endometriosis?
The most important part of the treatment is a correct assessment of the severity of the endometriosis by an expert. It also depends upon whether the patient needs only control of the symptoms or wants to get pregnant. Accordingly various medicines are used. Rarely if medical treatment fails, surgery may be required. Also if regular treatments for infertility fail, IVF may be required.
What’s the difference between normal period pain and Endometriosis pain?
Severe pelvic pain and cramping is one of the common symptoms of Endometriosis. If the pain persists and affects your quality of life and daily routine, it’s recommended that you see a doctor at the earliest. Hence, severe pelvic pain must not be confused with the normal period pain.
