Gunasheela Surgical and Maternity Hospital was founded by Dr. Sulochana Gunasheela. The hospital is led today by Dr. Devika Gunasheela, Medical Director.

What is Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)?+
ART includes all fertility treatments in which both eggs and sperms are handled. In general, ART procedures involve egg retrieval from the ovaries, combining them with sperm in the laboratory, and returning the resulting embryos to the uterus. This encompasses techniques such as IVF, ICSI, and embryo transfer.
When should one consider IVF?+
IVF may be considered in situations including tubal blockage, persistent low sperm count despite treatment, endometriosis, uterine abnormalities, unexplained infertility, women of older age, previously failed IUI procedures, problems with ovulation, or antibodies against sperm. A detailed consultation with our specialists will help determine the right approach for you.
Are the procedures involved in IVF painful?+
Most of IVF involves injections and blood tests, which cause brief discomfort; the injections are given with a fine needle just under the skin. Egg retrieval is done under short general anaesthesia, and mild cramping afterwards is common. Embryo transfer feels similar to a routine vaginal examination.
What are the potential risks of IVF?+
With any medical procedure, IVF carries certain risks including multiple pregnancies, which can increase the likelihood of complications during pregnancy or delivery. Other risks include ectopic pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), where the ovaries swell and cause discomfort. Our team will thoroughly explain all risks and help you make informed decisions.
How does age affect IVF success rates?+
Age is the biggest single factor in IVF outcomes. Chances are generally highest under 35 and fall steadily after 37, more sharply after 40. Your doctor will discuss your own chances after reviewing your tests.
What are the alternatives to IVF?+
Options such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or fertility medications can be beneficial, especially if your infertility issues are less severe. Additionally, addressing underlying health conditions and enhancing your overall fertility can be achieved through lifestyle changes. Our specialists will recommend the most appropriate path for you.
Do you determine or disclose the sex of the baby or embryo?+
No. Determining or disclosing the sex of a foetus or embryo is prohibited under the PC&PNDT Act and the ART (Regulation) Act and is a punishable offence. It is never done at Gunasheela.
