Welcome to Gunasheela
Gunasheela is a fertility and maternity hospital in Bengaluru, with centres at Basavanagudi, Koramangala and Ballari.
The hospital was established in 1975 by Dr. Sulochana Gunasheela and Dr. Mavalli Gunasheela as Gunasheela Surgical & Maternity Hospital. It began as a maternity home and added a fertility centre in 1985.
Today the hospital provides fertility treatment, obstetric and gynaecology care, and related specialties, with in-house laboratories and counselling support.
Over the years Gunasheela has added new techniques in reproductive medicine, including ICSI, in-vitro maturation, vitrification and pre-implantation genetic testing. The key dates are listed in the timeline below.

- Started ultrasound in obstetrics and gynaecology.

- Established the Gunasheela Fertility Centre with an IVF laboratory and research unit.
- Started laparoscopic treatment.
- First IVF baby born at Gunasheela on 5 December 1988.
- Started Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
- Introduced Class 10,000 clean-room laboratories.
- First In-Vitro Maturation (IVM) pregnancy at Gunasheela.
- Published three international papers on human blastocyst hatching.
- Established Hita Pharma with Iceline cold storage to maintain the cold chain for medicines.
- Birth of a baby conceived from vitrified IVM oocytes at Gunasheela.
- First EmbryoScope (time-lapse incubator) pregnancy at Gunasheela.
- Listed in “Top 10 Best Hospitals in India” — The Week / Hansa Research survey, 2012.
- India Health Care Award, Best Single Specialty Hospital — CNBC-TV18 & ICICI Lombard.

- Started fertility preservation for cancer patients on a charitable basis.

- Installed an RFID electronic witnessing system in the IVF laboratory.
- Obtained NABH entry-level certificate.
- Started ‘Aadya Human Milk Bank’, a non-profit unit in association with Rotary Club.
- Opened the Ballari centre as Gunasheela Girija Fertility Centre.
- Collaboration with the Indian Centre for Endometriosis for deep infiltrating endometriosis.

The Legacy Of
Gunasheela
The story of Gunasheela Hospital began with the inspiring vision of Dr. Sulochana Gunasheela. She aimed not only to practice medicine but to enrich families with the joy of childbirth. Deeply moved by the struggles faced by couples with infertility and pregnancy challenges, Dr. Sulochana was driven to explore deeper into medical science for answers. This journey was fueled by the birth of the world’s first IVF baby, sparking a hope-filled question: could this life-changing technology be brought to India to aid those in need?
Dr. Sulochana Gunasheela trained in Assisted Reproductive Technology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the USA. In 1985 she added the Gunasheela Fertility Centre to her maternity home, and the centre’s first IVF baby was born on 5 December 1988.
Dr. Sulochana Gunasheela’s work in infertility treatment laid the foundation of the hospital. Gunasheela continues to combine clinical care with research and the training of doctors and embryologists.
