Fertility Specialist in Bangalore: What They Do and When to See One

Fertility doctor explaining IUI treatment to a couple

If you have been trying to conceive without success, you may be advised to see a fertility specialist. Here is what they do and how they can help.

What is a fertility specialist?

A fertility specialist is a doctor who focuses on diagnosing and treating problems with conceiving and carrying a pregnancy. Most are gynaecologists with additional training in reproductive medicine. They work with both partners, because male factors contribute to many fertility problems.

How is a fertility specialist different from a gynaecologist?

A gynaecologist cares for women’s reproductive health in general and can start basic fertility tests. A fertility specialist has more training and experience in assessing infertility and offers treatments such as IUI, IVF, ICSI and fertility preservation.

What conditions do fertility specialists treat?

In women

In men

  • Low sperm count or poor sperm movement
  • No sperm in the semen (azoospermia)
  • Hormonal problems and problems with erection or ejaculation

See male fertility care.

For couples

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Fertility preservation before medical treatment or for planned delay

What can a fertility specialist do for me?

  • Arrange tests for both partners. See essential fertility tests
  • Explain the likely causes and your options
  • Offer treatment, from ovulation induction and IUI to IVF and ICSI
  • Coordinate care with other specialists, such as urologists, geneticists and counsellors

When should you see a fertility specialist?

After 12 months of trying if the woman is under 35, after 6 months if she is 35 to 39, and straight away if she is 40 or older or if either partner has a known condition. Read when to see a fertility specialist for the full guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do both partners need to see the fertility specialist?

Yes, ideally. Both partners are assessed, because male and female factors can both contribute.

Do I need a referral to see a fertility specialist?

A referral is not usually required. You can book a consultation directly.

Will a fertility specialist always recommend IVF?

No. Many couples need simpler treatment, such as ovulation induction or IUI. IVF is recommended when it is the most suitable option.
