Before IVF begins, both partners have a set of tests. These help your doctor understand the cause of infertility, choose the right treatment plan and make treatment as safe as possible.
Seven tests before starting IVF
1. Medical history and examination
Your doctor will ask about your periods, previous pregnancies, surgery, medicines, lifestyle and family history, and may examine you. Bring all previous reports.
2. Hormone tests
Blood tests such as FSH, LH, estradiol, prolactin and thyroid function check how the ovaries and other glands are working. See hormonal assays.
3. Ovarian reserve tests
AMH (a blood test) and an antral follicle count (an ultrasound) estimate how many eggs remain and help predict how the ovaries will respond to stimulation. See low AMH and IVF.
4. Pelvic ultrasound
A transvaginal ultrasound checks the uterus and ovaries for fibroids, polyps, cysts or other problems.
5. Evaluation of the uterine cavity
If a problem is suspected, tests such as a saline sonogram or hysteroscopy look inside the uterus, because conditions such as polyps can affect implantation.
6. Semen analysis
A semen analysis checks sperm count, movement and shape, and helps decide whether conventional IVF or ICSI is needed.
7. Infection screening
Both partners are usually tested for HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and syphilis. This protects you, your future baby and the laboratory.
