Our Understanding

Pre-Implantation Genetic Screening (PGS)

Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS), now more commonly referred to as Pre-implantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies (PGT-A), is an advanced genetic test used in conjunction with IVF to examine embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before transfer to the uterus. PGS is particularly beneficial for couples with a history of recurrent miscarriages, advanced maternal age, or known chromosomal disorders.

It significantly increases the chances of a successful pregnancy by ensuring that only genetically healthy embryos are selected for implantation.

Frequently Asked Questions

PGT-A is a sophisticated genetic test conducted on embryos produced through IVF to identify any chromosomal abnormalities. This screening helps in selecting genetically normal embryos for transfer, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby.

PGT-A is recommended for individuals with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss, those with known chromosomal disorders, women of advanced maternal age, couples with repeated IVF failures, and those wishing to increase the chances of a successful IVF cycle.

After IVF, embryos are cultured to the blastocyst stage (day 5 or 6). A few cells are then carefully removed from each blastocyst and analyzed for chromosomal abnormalities. Only embryos without these abnormalities are considered for transfer.

PGT-A can significantly increase the likelihood of a successful pregnancy, reduce the risk of miscarriage, and decrease the likelihood of having a child with a chromosomal disorder.

The biopsy procedure for PGT-A carries minimal risk to the embryo. There's a small possibility of damage, but with experienced embryologists and advanced techniques, this risk is significantly reduced.

PGT-A extends the IVF process slightly since it requires time to grow embryos to the blastocyst stage and for genetic testing to be completed. It may also involve freezing embryos until the test results are back.

PGT-A specifically screens for chromosomal abnormalities. For single gene disorders, a related procedure known as Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) or PGT-M (for monogenic/single gene defects) is used.

The success rate of IVF with PGT-A can be higher than traditional IVF due to the selection of chromosomally normal embryos. Success rates can vary based on several factors, including maternal age and fertility history.

Embryos with detected abnormalities are not transferred. Decisions on what to do with these embryos are made on a case-by-case basis, considering ethical, legal, and personal preferences.

Preparation for PGT-A involves the same steps as a standard IVF cycle. Gunasheela provides detailed guidance on the IVF process and any additional steps or considerations for incorporating PGT-A.

The cost of PGT-A is additional to the IVF cycle cost and varies based on several factors, including the number of embryos tested. Gunasheela offers transparent pricing and financial counseling.

Gunasheela provides comprehensive support services, including counseling, to help patients understand the process and implications of PGT-A, assisting them in making informed decisions throughout their fertility journey.
