Fertility treatment can be physically and emotionally demanding. Gentle yoga and breathing exercises will not replace medical treatment, but many people find they help them relax, sleep better and cope with stress during IVF.
How can yoga help during IVF?
- Helps reduce stress and anxiety
- Encourages better sleep
- Gently improves flexibility and circulation
- Gives you a calm routine to focus on during waiting periods
There is no strong evidence that yoga directly increases IVF success rates, but feeling calmer and more in control is valuable in itself. See coping with the emotional impact of infertility.
Five ways to make the most of yoga during IVF
Focus on your breathing
Slow, deep breathing calms the nervous system. Try breathing in for four counts and out for six, for a few minutes each day.
Take it slow
Choose gentle, restorative poses rather than strenuous or hot yoga. Move slowly and stop if anything hurts.
Embrace the stillness
Simple poses such as supported child’s pose or lying with legs resting up a wall can help you rest and relax.
Connect with your body
Notice how you feel, without judgement. This can help you recognise tension and let it go.
Picture yourself positively
Short relaxation or guided imagery practices at the end of a session can help you feel calmer.
When to be careful
- During ovarian stimulation, the ovaries are enlarged, so avoid twists, inversions and intense abdominal work
- After egg collection, rest for a day or two and follow your doctor’s advice
- After embryo transfer, gentle activity is fine, but avoid strenuous exercise
- If you have pain, bleeding or feel unwell, stop and contact your clinic
Practise safely
Tell your yoga teacher that you are having fertility treatment, and check with your doctor if you have any medical conditions. Other ways to relax, such as walking, meditation and counselling, can also help. Read how to prepare for IVF.
